What is Mobile Phlebotomy?

Mobile Phlebotomy is, in short, the practice of phlebotomy outside the context of a clinic or laboratory environment. Mobile phlebotomy may occur at the bedside of a homebound patient, or at a skilled nursing facility, on site at a Bio-tech company or research organization, or at the offices of a business for a corporate wellness program. In essence, Mobile Phlebotomy can occur almost anywhere when specimen collection is needed or wanted at the location of the patient.

What is a Mobile Phlebotomist?

Phlebotomists are medical personnel specially trained to perform venipuncture (draw blood), collect and process blood specimens from a patient for clinical testing, transfusions, donations, or research.

Phlebotomists collect blood primarily by performing venipunctures. But, for collection of very small quantities of blood, this may also be done by a smaller, less invasive skin puncture called a “finger stick” or may be collected from infants by means of a “heel stick”.

Our Blood Draw Services & Duties

The duties of a our phlebotomists include:

1. Properly identifying the patient
2. Interpreting the tests requested on the requisition form (lab order)
3. Drawing blood into the correct tubes with the proper additives
4. Accurately explaining the procedure to the patients, preparing patients accordingly
5. Practicing the required forms of asepsis, practicing standard and universal precautions
6. Performing the skin/vein puncture, withdrawing blood into containers or tubes
7. Restoring hemostasis of the puncture site, instructing patients on “post puncture care”
8. Delivering specimens back to a laboratory in the specified manner (as requested by the hospital and laboratory procedures of the hospital or outpatient phlebotomy center)
9. Ordering tests per the laboratory requisition form (lab order)
10. Manually labeling the specimens or affixing electronically printed labels
11. Transferring or transporting the specimens to a laboratory where Clinical Laboratory Scientists (CLS) or a Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) perform the testing.

Licensing Requirements for Phlebotomists

In the United States training requirements for phlebotomists are determined state by state however, most nation healthcare organizations that employ phlebotomists do require some form of training and certification from a certifying organization.

Special state certification is required only in three states: California, Nevada, and Louisiana.

A phlebotomist can become nationally certified through many different organizations. However, California currently only accepts national certificates from six agencies.

These include: American Certification Agency (ACA), American Medical Technologists (AMT), American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), National Center for Competency Testing/Multi-skilled Medical Certification Institute (NCCT/MMCI), National Credentialing Agency (NCA), and National Health-career Association (NHA).

These and other agencies also certify phlebotomists outside the state of California. In order to qualify to sit for the certification examination in phlebotomy: you must complete a full phlebotomy training course that includes both didactic and practical training components and provide documentation of having obtained a minimum number of hours in clinical or laboratory experience.
